Sarix Disaster Site To Be Resettled
In Europa Brittania today, a team of engineers, scientists and military personnel from several countries are preparing to enter the long-deserted city of New Providence. On the scene is Clinton Shaughnessy. Clint, what is the situation?
"Well, Norman, as you know, New Providence suffered absolute devastation in the Sarix gas release of '96, and the whole city has been a no-go area since. But now Brittania has decided to try to re-open New Providence. The team will be made up of specialists from across the EuroIslands; I understand the Center for Public Health in Cellardke is one of the bodies involved, along with EuroSoviet military personnel and many others. Details on the mission are sketchy at the moment, but I understand that this team's first task will be to establish and minimise the risk of working in the city, so that infrastructure providers can come in.
They have a huge task ahead of them; Sarix, or 'Sodium Ammonate retrohesive inversion epression' is a nerve agent which is designed to cause massive casualties and than dissipate to enable quick occupation by following infantry. But when I spoke to Professor Hipgrave at Cellard**e CPH, he had concerns:
"Sarix VII is considered safe enough for invading troops after a period of about 90 minutes, but that assumes that the soldiers will be using breathing apparatus and so on. Even with that proviso, unexplained deaths have occured in units exposed to Sarix VII, especially after the first Atlantic War, where it was used attacks upon the Cape Verde Islands and some of the men that had occupied the Islands subsequently suffered what has become known as 'Cape Verde Syndrome,' with symptoms including motor damage, memory loss, respiratory difficulties and a high death rate in early middle age. Our staff will be attempting to establish if there remains any risk of contact with active doses of Sarix in New Providence"
Since that interview, the CPH representative on the mission to New Providence has been named as biochemist Dr. Angela Wilson. Dr Wilson is expected to arrive at the Brittanian Department of the Environment this evening.
CPH biochemist Dr Angela Wilson.
As yet, there has been only one, fairly terse, press release from the Europa Brittania government, but I will of course be here to cover any development.
This is Clinton Shaughnessy, for ENN, at the Department of the Environment, Europa Britannia."
And coverage of that story continues on ENN Live24 from Europa Britannia.
